Cancellieri Demonstrates Flashing Moments of Brilliance in Positive Aspect for Struggling Lazio
The mood at their home stadium was anything but joyful during the weekend fixture. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, a side that had let in ten goals while netting just two in their last five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their ongoing dissent in a continuous dispute with chairman Claudio Lotito.
A Season Coming Unstitched?
Was Lazio's season unraveling, or was there ever a binding element maintaining its structure in the first place? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as head coach during the off-season, only for him admitted that the management had failed to disclose a ban on new signings they were set to be hit with for accounting issues. Reports that he might quit were unfounded, but he stated that Lotito had "swindled" him.
The Biancocelesti appeared equally disorganized on the pitch as off the field, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in the remaining initial five matches, including the Rome derby. From one game to the next, it has been hard to tell if progress is being made or self-destructing.
Matteo's Unforeseen Return
A single player continued to smile amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to feature for Lazio during this campaign. He completed last season with Parma on loan and, during the summer break, his parent club were advocating for him to remain there for another season. The signing restriction led to a change of plans. The club couldn't risk to weaken their team with no new signings.
He signed in the first place when Sarri was last in charge, at that time a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He made 20 Serie A appearances for Lazio in the 2022-23 season, the vast majority of those from the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed at the end of that season, subsequently claimed Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri would be a star but then not selecting him."
Discovering His Natural Fit
Perhaps the manager was still trying to work out the specific characteristics of Cancellieri's abilities. Billed as a flank player when he joined, Cancellieri instead found himself much of that season as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile at No 9. In 63 appearances during spells with Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
