EU Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.
