Tetris Wouldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Could Fix That

As any major prize-giving event draws close, there’s always a demand to include of new categories to acknowledge unsung work and satisfy the hearts of fans who have specialized interests.

Another commentator made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. So would board games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize because like all single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification for why my demand remains most pressing and significant. The demand is this: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and typically start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why film award organizations avoid this approach. Yet it remains an essential concession for the industry of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they hardly constitute a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies currently feature classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types effectively encompass numerous genres, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: building puzzles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers published annually without proper recognition in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition completely during that awards season
  • A different innovative game was excluded during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
  • Only a few puzzle games scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often compact experiences, however the design in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most popular titles worldwide continuing this trend for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience rivals famous sandbox experiences for the title of most purchased experience; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories in important events. Logic title developers function at the challenging frontier of video game design, creating some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait generations.
